Have you heard of Facepocalypse? Facebook is currently shutting down advertising accounts left, right and centre. They’ve always had a Terms of Service policy but have been somewhat lax in enforcing it—until now. Accounts are being shut down for offences that occurred weeks and even months ago.

In the past couple of weeks there have been more changes around Facebook ads than there were in the year before it. What is the lesson here? Well, to follow the Terms of Service, for one thing! But there’s an even bigger lesson wrapped up in the whole debacle.

The Quicksand Effect

Facebook advertising has been a crucial form of lead generation for many small and medium businesses over the last few years. Cheaper than television, more trackable than print, and more targetable than Google, Facebook advertising offered a fresh and exciting way to market.

The reason why you shouldn’t rely on one lead source is the subject of another article. But if you’re going to primarily use the one source there’s one massive golden rule: you need to stay on your toes.

Facebook can, will, and should change the way they do business regularly. They need to be constantly innovating in order to keep their visitors coming back and thus their ad revenue increasing. And if you’re going to advertise with them, you need to be totally across that.

The worst thing you can do when things are changing is get stuck in virtual quicksand, struggling to move even an inch, and sinking further and further every time you do.

You’ll still find “experts” proposing to teach you how to do Facebook ads, using methods that will get your account shut down. You’ll still find people committed to doing what worked a month ago or a year ago, instead of hustling to find out exactly what’s working right now.

If You’re Not Moving Forward, You’re Getting Left Behind

One of the most valuable skills you can have in business is the ability to rapidly innovate. That means dropping everything and getting to work as soon as change happens, to work out the best way to move forward.

If you were to get your Facebook advertising account shut down, what would you do? Make another one and keep doing the same thing you were?

Or, would it make more sense to start by going over the Terms of Service and working out exactly where you went wrong, so you will know how to avoid doing it again?

Or, would you contact someone who knows about the changes and learn from them?

How about making a list of other lead generation sources so you can diversify?

The crucial thing here is action. If you’re not moving forward, you’re getting left behind. It’s likely you can’t afford to be giving up ground to your competitors right now—can anyone, really?

The faster you move, the faster you’ll get ahead. Just don’t keep getting sucked down into that quick sand, where businesses go to die.
