Vimeo’s New Innovation is All About Equality

Video hosting and distribution platform Vimeo have recently announced how they plan to tackle the issue of equality in the film industry.

Launched in late-January, Share the Screen will see the company investing in workshops and various content to spotlight the obstacles women in film face.

“Gender inequality in filmmaking isn’t simply a woman’s problem: it’s everyone’s problem. When diverse voices are given equal consideration and weight, more informed artistic decisions are made, better stories are told — and it’s also the right thing to do as human beings,” said Director of Production and Community Andrea Allen in a post announcing the initiative.

It’s an important move by Vimeo, which supports a strong base of professional filmmakers due to its focus on high-quality content and dedication to community.

So far, Share the Screen has highlighted work by Saturday Night Live star Aldy Bryant, and interviewed director Penny Lane, whose latest film, NUTS!, screened at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. The intention is to provide events for women filmmakers at various stages in their career.

It’s a fantastic idea, and one we will be sure to keep track of in the future.
