A visit to E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo) is like taking a glimpse into the future of technology. All the major brands in the space debut their new products at the expo, with exciting presentations and demonstrations that have all game fans salivating. The recent E3 was no different, with the focus on virtual and augmented reality: the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset, is the most anticipated product in years, and several other companies are developing similar headsets.

While the equipment is getting more advanced, the games themselves are heading in the same direction. One particular standout is No Man’s Sky. This is a sci-fi game with a difference: it takes place in an infinite galaxy. How? The galaxy is procedurally generated—meaning each planet is designed by a program following a set of parameters, instead of by a human programmer.

As you can see in the video below, this results in a vast universe of planets to explore, each slightly different from those around it, and each waiting to be discovered and explored by gamers. The potential for this game to be used with a virtual reality headset brings another dimension to its innovative feel.

The game is expected to be released in 2016. You can read more about it here.
