Playing the Woman Card

“The only thing she’s got going is the woman’s card,” declared Donald Trump regarding Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton late last month.

It was the kind of shortsighted, bullheaded comment Trump has become infamous for over the least year, and it played into Clinton’s hands perfectly. Soon after, she started issuing official ‘Woman Cards‘ to supporters of her campaign.

A group of art directors from across the world took the statement more seriously, however, and have recently produced an entire deck of cards featuring powerful and inspiring women in order to “turn negatives into positives by calling out damaging gender stereotypes.”

Maddy Kramer, senior art director for the VML Kansas City agency, developed the concept. “We knew we had to respond and be fun about it,” she told Adweek.

28 diverse designers and illustrators ultimately joined the project. They included men and women from the US, UK, Spain, and Argentina.

Kramer made a list of notable individuals, which were then filtered down by the group in order to represent women from different nations and industries.

Chosen icons included UFC legend Ronda Rousey, author J.K. Rowling, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and, of course, musician Beyonce.

Naturally, all are represented on queen cards.

Each card is distinct, and all share in raising awareness of an issue that has, perhaps, never been more topical.

This deck aims to turn negatives into positives by calling out damaging gender stereotypes, and remind people there is no such thing as a ‘Woman Card’. Until now.”

The deck – which can be seen in full at womancard.co – is planned to be sold in the coming months, with all revenue going to a nonprofit organisation yet to be determined, though Kramer has proposed the United Nations’ Fund for Gender Equality.

Packs will also feature a joker. No surprise who adorns that card.
