The Ghostbusters reboot is coming, and so is Ghost Mode, a special partnership between ride-book service Lyft and Sony Pictures that will allow users to hitch a ride in a replica of the Ghostbusters’ classic Cadillac, Ecto-1.
It’s a fan’s dream come true…provided they live in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Boston, or Washington D.C.
Five Cadillacs will patrol each city on July 1 and 2, with lucky passengers receiving a free ride, complementary gifts, and a chance to win tickets to the new film’s LA premiere.
The promotion is just the latest chapter in a competition between Uber and Lyft to draw attention to their services, with Lyft quickly catching up in popularity after Uber’s three year headstart. Most recently, Lyft’s MyFly Mode event celebrated the day Marty McFly arrived in the future in Back to the Future II. Drives dressed as the character, and cruised around in DeLoreans.
“We’re not aspiring to be a replacement for a taxi,” said Lyft’s creative director, Jesse McMillin. “Obviously we need to get you from Point A to Point B and do that really well, but if we can do these things that make you think, ‘Wow, that experience is something that I haven’t necessarily had before,’ then we’re creating a space for ourselves in the overall category that’s unique.”
