Title: Tribute Band
Artist: Darryl Tilson
About the Work: Tribute Band is Australian artist Darryl Tilson’s homage to one of his late, great peers, Mike Brown.
“Tribute Band…is a copy of his 1980 painting (Mindscape), and is made with the same attitude as a musician covering a song,” says Tilson.
The concept of ‘covering’ another artist’s work is rarely explored in the medium, but the simple variances in colour show how even the smallest elements define an artwork’s uniqueness, and can provide insight into the individual artist.
Tribute Band is just one of several of Tilson’s creations on display as part of his Landscapes and Mindscapes, which opens on July 30th at the 69 Smith Street Gallery, Fitzroy.
Tilson draws from a range of themes and styles, including 1980s Australian painting, graffiti, indigenous art, children’s art, Asian art, and collaborative art.
“My approach is often like a chef respectfully borrowing flavours from another cuisine,” he explains. “The paintings may seem rather chaotic at first glance, but they offer to lead the viewer to a meditative place.”
If you’re in Melbourne, be sure to visit the exhibition, and visit the other galleries on location.
