Artwork: Borrowed Time.
Artist: Lou Hamou-Lhadj and Andrew Coats.

About the work:

A memorable short film is one that can embody all the elements of a feature – character, tone, style, story – in only a few short minutes. Emerging filmmakers hone their style in the medium for this very reason; because it is the ideal training ground and excuse for experimentation.

Such is the case for writer/directors Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj, and producer Amanda Deering Jones. The three veterans work at iconic animation studio Pixar, Borrowed Time marks their first production under the Quorum Films banner.

Though the animation style feels very similar to like that produced by high-end studios like Pixar, the dark tale about a sheriff recounting a haunting experience from his youth is unlike what you may expect from people who had a hand in making the likes of Toy StoryThe Good Dinosaur, and Inside Out.

“The goal for us was to make something that kind of contested the notion of animation being a genre…for children specifically,” says Hamou-Lhadj in the behind-the-scenes featurette accompanying the film. While that belief may not be as widely held as it was in the pre-Toy Story days, it is a treat to see world-class Hollywood animation being used in more diverse projects.

Borrowed Time is available to watch online for a limited time. Be sure to check it out while you still can.
