The Phenomenon of Floating depicts a woman floating serenely on a lake, staring up into the sky. Or, in her tranquil state, has she ascended amongst the stars, and is now looking back at the world she leaves behind?
It’s a beautiful interpretation of those rare moments of weightlessness in life, when, just for a moment, we seem to shift out of time, out of place, and simply exist.
The themes of Gonsalves’ work transcend the individual paintings to become a celebration of imagination. They are not merely illusionary, nor can they be defined as surrealist. The term that comes to mind is magical realism: the notion that fantastic wonders can be found within our mundane world, if only we look and think hard enough to find them.
