The Art: I Know What You Did Last Summer
The Artist: Speak in Stanzas

About the Work:

A hauntingly serene depiction of a night in the countryside holds a hidden meaning in this piece by Canadian artist Speak in Stanzas.

Created with water colours and copic markers, I Know What You Did Last Summer was a cathartic exercise by the self-taught artist.

Coming from a conservative background, she has little experience with relationships. So when she discovered, via social media, that her boyfriend had spent the previous summer camping with his now ex-girlfriend, she struggled to deal with the resulting insecurities.

The piece was Speak in Stanzas’ way of putting her feelings into perspective, and it shows. Its beauty is hinged on the artwork’s delicacy, and yet rooted underneath it all is what might be perceived as an iceberg of jealousy; a result of the artist’s inability to dislocate the emotions of the past from the objective beauty of the landscape.

Speak with Stanzas’ work is currently on Instagram, and available to purchase on Society6. There’s not much on either platform at the moment, but we can’t wait to see how her artistic endeavours pan out over the coming year.
