Title: For A Minute There, I Lost Myself
Artist:
Gaia Alari

About the Work:

Karma police
I’ve given all I can
It’s not enough
I’ve given all I can
But we’re still on the payroll

For a minute there, I lost myself…

Karma Police – Radiohead

Italian artist Gaia Alari’s work speaks of alienation and displacement within ourselves; of those moments when it feels like the world has us beaten, and the future remains unclear.

The most notable element of the piece are the subject’s eyes. They immediately steal the viewer’s attention, shining with an ethereal light that perfectly captures the overwhelming nature of the theme. Combined with the striking contrast of colour and remarkable attention to detail, it’s the kind of drawing you can look at for minutes, finding a greater appreciation for it as time goes on.

Remarkably, the piece was created using a mix of traditional media – watercolours, pencil, black market, coloured pencils, and white pen – on a piece of standard A3 paper. It speaks volumes to Alari’s talent, and proves that artists need not resort to digital tools to create complex, dynamic designs.
